WEDNESDAY, 22ND MAY
“I was at Wentworth earlier and had to be collected at the 13th and brought back in a buggy. I have an appointment with a specialist this afternoon then I will go home to rest. It means I will miss the Mandatory Players Meeting today but I shouldn’t be sitting in the same place for any length of time.
“I think I will play tomorrow but to what standard I can compete remains to be seen. When I finished on Monday the back went into spasm and I had a very bad night. Tuesday I tried to rest and came here this morning with Denis Pugh to do some pitching. I wanted to see the new bunkering at the 13th and 15th. I only managed five holes before I came in. I couldn’t practice at all and I won’t get a practice round but it’s not as if I don’t know my way round. I wanted a late start tomorrow to give me more recovery time but I haven’t got it. I’m off at 8.30 and I have to get on with it. We have to go with that.
I am seeing a chiropractor and osteopath. I have to get some flexibility into my back. I don’t know how I am going to feel but I will give it a go. The weather isn’t looking good, showery and squally, and that doesn’t help. I want to give it a go because my swing and my rhythm are good at the moment.
I was proud of how I competed on Monday considering I had no sleep whatsoever on Sunday night. Not a wink. I knew I had to keep mobile and was worried that if I fell asleep I would wake up stiff which happened once before at the Volvo Masters in Spain. I didn’t even go to bed. It was still made up in the morning. I kept moving about the room watching DVDs until 6am when the sun came up and I went to the course at 7am. I practised for two and a half hours to get as loose as possible so as you can imagine I was knackered afterwards! I’ve never done anything like that before.
I was happy to start with three birdies in the final round and 72 holes was the limit for me. 75 holes was three too many. Still, Tiger sets the standards and I matched them on Monday. I would have taken 20 under at the start of the week.”
