The Smurfit Kappa European Open
The K Club
Straffan, Co. Kildare, Republic of Ireland 06 Jul 2006 - 09 Jul 2006
Dodd at the Double in Ireland
He might not countenance such talk, but Stephen Dodd has turned his season around to such an extent that he can start thinking about a possible return to The K Club under the captaincy of fellow Welshman Ian Woosnam following his two stroke victory in the Smurfit Kappa European Open. Dodd has now won both of Ireland’s top two golfing titles and the prospect of achieving a unique treble by adding The Ryder Cup as part of a successful European Team in September is not something he is willing to get carried away with.
Horses for Courses Theory Suits Lara
The old axiom of horses for courses was never more in evidence than at The K Club’s Smurfit Course as contender after contender, swathed in full sets of waterproofs, trudged wearily off the 18th green in the third round of the Smurfit Kappa European Open. Seemingly oblivious to all of this was Spaniard José Maria Lara, who revived happy memories of the same punishing layout in 2004 by once again playing his way into the final group on Sunday.
Red Dragon Roars As Dredge and Dodd Take Control at The K Club
A fascinating second round at the Smurfit Kappa European Open went the way of the Welsh, as WGC–World Cup winning partners Bradley Dredge and Stephen Dodd finished clear of home favourite and past winner Darren Clarke at The K Club.
Dredge and Fasth Lead in Front of Record Crowds at the Smurfit Kappa European Open
Eleven weeks before one Welshman, Ian Woosnam, takes centre stage as Europe’s Ryder Cup Captain at The K Club, it was another golfer of the same nationality who enjoyed his day in the spotlight in front of the biggest single-day crowd at the first round of the Smurfit Kappa European Open.
Thanks to the patronage of Ulster Bank, which offered free general admission for the first round, an attendance of 29,032 experienced the excitement of The European Tour at close quarters, with Dredge and Swede Niclas Fasth ending “Super Thursday” on top of the leaderboard on 65, seven under par.

Lead Roles for Irish Trio as Curtain Rises for Act One at The K Club
The first instalment in an eagerly-awaited “two-parter” at The K Club in County Kildare begins its opening act on Thursday when a star-studded cast tees up in the first round of the Smurfit Kappa European Open. The Irish Ryder Cup trio of Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley will be hoping to play lead roles as they go in search of valuable Ryder Cup points, a share of the record £2.4 million (€3,499,730) prize fund, and the second home victory in the tournament’s history.
