Tournament History

Following the drama of Turnberry in 2009, the greatest Major Championship remains in Scotland in 2010 when it returns to the spiritual home of the game itself – the Old Course at St Andrews.
History seeps from every pore of the classic links and all the game’s greats down the years have had the honour of holding the Claret Jug above their heads at the Fife venue.
The man in possession of the most famous trophy in golf as the week begins in St Andrews is American Stewart Cink who claimed his first Major title at Turnberry as golfing legend Tom Watson missed out on the chance to create history during a dramatic four days in Ayrshire.
The 59 year old Watson needed only a par four at the 72nd hole to become the oldest Major Champion in history but put his approach shot through the green to make bogey five and resign himself to a play-off with Cink which the younger American won comfortably as Watson’s momentum faltered.
It was also a case of ‘ what might have been’ for England’s Lee Westwood who was in superb form during the week but who narrowly missed out on the play-off when he too bogeyed the last hole.
