US Open Graeme McDowell was presented with his European Tour Race to Dubai Golfer of the Month Award for June at the 3 Irish Open.
Swamped by huge crowds around the first tee at the Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, the Northern Irishman was given a hero’s welcome as he was presented with his Sliver Alms dish by his Pro-Am playing partner Robert Finnegan, the CEO of 3 Ireland, and European Tour Chief Executive.
McDowell won the June award for his two victories that month at The Celtic Manor Wales Open and, of course, the US Open Championship as he became the first Irish player in history to pick up the season’s second Major title.
“It will come as no surprise to anyone that June 2010 is a month that will live in my memory for the rest of my life,” said McDowell when he was announced as the Golfer of the Month.
“To win my first Major Championship was a truly special moment and to have it acknowledged by being voted European Tour Golfer of the Month simply adds icing on the cake.
“I have said all along that there are many people who have helped me achieve success. Obviously my parents are top of that list but all the team at Horizon Sports Management have been fantastic to me as have all the coaches I have worked with over the years who have helped me get to where I am today.
“Finally, I must thank my caddie Ken Comboy who was different class on that final day at Pebble Beach. They are all owed an immense debt of gratitude and I would like to think this award is for them all too.”
