Just one stroke separated the leading six players as the Alfred Dunhill Championship built towards its climax at Leopard Creek in South Africa.
Garth Mulroy led by two overnight, but took six on the long second and remained one over par for the day after five holes.
That put him alongside fellow South Africans Jbe Kruger and Hennie Otto on 14 under, with compatriot Merrick Bremner, Scotland's Peter Whiteford and Chilean Felipe Aguilar one behind.
Mulroy, playing with a yellow ball, went back in front with a birdie at the sixth and then found himself three clear after holing a 12 footer for birdie at the eighth.
Kruger’s challenge looked to have come undone when he found the water at the ninth, and it was left to Otto, Bremner, Aguilar and Scotland’s George Murray to take up the pursuit.
