After Rory McIlroy’s thrilling victory at the UBS Hong Kong Open, europeantour.com delves into the Northern Irishman’s bag to uncover his tools of choice in Fanling.
The 2011 US Open Champion was notably inside the top 25 on all elements of his Genworth Statistics in Hong Kong, with the most significant number being his status as the number one ranked golfer in terms of Greens in Regulation last week, the Ulsterman hitting an incredible 80.6 percent of greens in regulation in what was a stunning display of approach work.
McIlroy is ranked 15th in the Driving Distance statistics for the season averaging an excellent 301.6 yards over the course of the year, and he again showed his prowess and strength from the tee throughout last week’s performance, coming in at eleventh in the Driving Distance category in Hong Kong with a 304.1-yard average drive.
With an 8.5 degree driver in his bag, McIlroy’s equipment, and his natural ability to produce superb torque and club head speed, combines to great effect as is evident in his superlative driving stats.
And McIlroy’s performance in Hong Kong, averaging 67.00 Strokes per Round last week, helped elevate the World Number Two to the top spot in the season-long stroke average category, at 69.13 shots.
McIlroy sealed his noteworthy victory yesterday, of course, with an exhilarating chip-in from a greenside bunker at the 18th hole, going against the grain of his season stats for Sand Saves – where he ranks 56th - when it mattered most.
Knowing he had to get down in two shots to avoid a play-off with Frenchman Grégory Havret, McIlroy flopped a delightful 60 degree lob wedge out of the sand onto the 18th green that, once it landed, was never anywhere else other than in the centre of the hole. Forget two shots, how about one.
It was truly sensational stuff from a special talent. Here’s what was in his bag last week:
