Find out the keys to Paul Lawrie's victory at the Commercialbank Qatar Masters (EuropeanTour)
Find out the keys to Paul Lawrie's victory at the Commercialbank Qatar Masters (EuropeanTour)
Paul Lawrie wielded the contents of his bag with the precision and flair of a Major Champion in Qatar last week en route to a deserved victory that comes at the end of a sparkling run of form.

The Scot announced himself back in the winner’s circle last April when he won in Andalucía, but it has been his form of late – namely since the Dubai World Championship presented by DP World at the end of 2011 – that had seen many people tipping him, and rightly so, for the win in Qatar.

It was a particularly rounded performance from Lawrie who only ranked outside the top ten in one statistical category, and even then, he was only 23rd in Driving Accuracy for the week.

But the stand out moments in Sunday’s final round came as a result of ‘Chippy’s’ exemplary touch around the greens, holing twice from off the putting surface, once for eagle at the ninth and then again for a birdie at the short 17th.

This kind of superb short game display also smartened up an already impressive set of putting statistics, namely his average of 27.5 putts per round across the three days to rank fifth in the field, as well as an even more impressive third in putts per GIR.

In the final two categories, Lawrie remained long from the tee throughout the week averaging a smidge above 300 yards and ranking ninth in the field, while he also found the greens in the right number 79.6 per cent of the time to rank seventh.

It had already been an impressive start to the season for the 1999 Open Champion finishing in the top ten in his previous three starts, and by improving his statistical performance by a little in every category this last week in Qatar, it was enough to push him over the top and back into the winner’s enclosure for his second win in the desert and his seventh on The European Tour.
