Tournament History

Since the introduction of the World Golf Championship events in 1999 they have been an example of just what is possible when the best players in the world go head to head, and in this instance, the match play format has thrown up as many major upsets as it has scintillating matches. In 2011 Luke Donald got the ball rolling on what proved to be the best season of his career, defeating the then World Number One, Martin Kaymer in the 36 hole final. This was the second consecutive all European final, after Ian Poulter defeated Paul Casey in 2010, and was also the fourth European triumph in this event after Henrik Stenson in 2007, and Darren Clarke back in 2000.
