Tournament History

The Volvo World Match Play Championship returns to Finca Cortesin for the third time in 2012, after Ian Poulter proved his credentials as one of the game’s great match players with an impressive win in the final against, soon to be World Number One, Luke Donald.  Since moving to Spain in 2009 it has in fact been a very happy hunting ground for the English, with Ross Fisher in the first staging of the event after its relocation to Spain. Before moving, the championship had called Wentworth home from 1964 through to 2007, and had a roll of honour that read like a who’s-who of the best in the game. The most prolific of any though, was South Africa’s Ernie Els, who picked up a record six titles in two sets of three – the first coming from 1994 to 1996, and followed by 2002 to 2004.
