Finca Cortesín, Casares, Spain

Designed by award-winning American golf course architect Cabell Robinson, Finca Cortesín opened to great acclaim in 2007, a challenging golf course with world-class facilities and a luxury boutique hotel immediately setting a new gold standard for Spain in general and Andalucía in particular.

Finca Cortesín was subsequently selected to host the 2009 Volvo World Match Play Championship, the first time this venerable event had been staged away from the Wentworth Club near London, with Englishman Ross Fisher taking the title.

The Volvo World Match Play Championship subsequently returned to Finca Cortesín in May 2011, another Englishman, this time Ian Poulter taking the title in a 24-man field that was of the highest calibre in recent years, all four current ‘Major’ champions taking part, as did six of the top-10 players in the world.

Finca Cortesín is situated within a spacious estate of over 2million square metres 1.5km inland from the Costa del Sol, equidistant between Estepona and Sotogrande.

Located 11km / 7 miles west of Marbella, Finca Cortesín can be accessed from the AP7 Motorway (tolls applicable), the A7 and the A340.

Finca Cortesín is served by two international airports, Málaga (AGP) which is 72.4 km / 45 miles to the east and Gibraltar (GIB), approximately 32km / 20 miles to the west.

Airlines which fly from the UK into Malaga include easyJet, Thomson Flights, AerLingus, Ryanair, flythomascook, bmibaby, Monarch, British Airways, Jet2.com and Flybe.

The airlines which operate domestic routes in Spain to over 20 airports are the national carrier Iberia and Spanair, Air Europa, Ryanair, Vueling and Air Berlin, with routes to Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Bilbao, the Canary Islands and Mallorca.

Gibraltar (GIB) Airport offers services mainly to and from the UK with EasyJet, BA and Monarch; American Airways has a scheduled flight to New York via London Heathrow.

In May, the time the Volvo World Match Play Championship is staged, the climate is generally pleasantly warm and dry with an average of 19ºC and 28 days of sunshine; however, it can be cool during the evenings.
