Joost Luiten hopes to draw on his experience of winning the Iskandar Johor Open as the Dutchman tries to secure a second European Tour title at the ISPS Handa Wales Open.

The 26 year old shot a brilliant third round 64 at The Celtic Manor Resort - the best score of the week - to surge to six under par and lie one behind leader Thongchai Jaidee.

“It's a course that if you play well, you can shoot a decent score,” he said. “I played well, my putting was good, and there's some low ones out there.

“The weather was tough because it was quite cold this morning, and the balls flew a little further in the afternoon. The wind was swirling around and it was really tough to decide where it came from. You need to be patient and take your time over shots.”

Luiten’s maiden European Tour title came in Malaysia last November, when he held off Daniel Chopra in an event shortened to 54 holes.

That victory boosted his chances of making a Ryder Cup debut at Medinah later in the year, and victory here would significantly close the gap on Peter Hanson, who currently occupies the fifth and final place on the European points list.

But for now the World Number 87 is focussed on adding to his fledgling trophy haul.

“It's always good to have a win in your pocket and that gives you more confidence, of course,” he added. “I think it will make you walk a bit taller.

“I need to come out tomorrow and shoot another good score to have a good chance tomorrow, so I'm not really bothered about the other guys.

“I didn't have a great start. I was one over after five, I made a bogey at the fifth and came back with two nice birdies on six and seven and that got my round going.

“After that I missed a short putt on eight, made another good putt on nine and ten and then that just created a lot of chances and I made some nice putts. And the one on 15, that's a bonus.” He eagled the driveable par four.
