Jim Furyk continued to lead the way in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone, but Spain’s Rafael Cabrera-Bello was up into a share of second after a flying start on day two.

Cabrera-Bello, who carded a 66 yesterday to share third place, made birdies at two and three this morning to reach six under and close within one shot of Furyk, the overnight leader following a sublime 63.

The veteran American, who came close to glory in this year’s US Open Championship, picked up a shot of his own at the second to restore his two-stroke advantage, only for Cabrera-Bello to respond with another birdie at ten.

England’s Lee Slattery was also right behind Furyk on seven under, having followed a bogey at four with birdies at six, seven and ten.

John Senden sat fourth on five under, one clear of a group of players containing World Number One Luke Donald, who is among the afternoon starters today.

Further down the field, Rory McIlroy birdied his second and third holes after starting at the 10th to reach two under, although he then bogeyed the 14th.

Those out this morning in Ohio experienced glorious sunshine once again and temperatures of 94 degrees were anticipated later in the day.
