Before teeing off in the third round of the Portugal Masters, Miguel Angel Jiménez and Johan Edfors attended a junior golf experience with local youngsters from the Vilamoura Golf Club School.

The clinic was jointly organised by the Portuguese Golf Federation, which is spearheading an initiative to develop junior golf in the country, and Oceânico, which sponsors the Vilamoura Golf Club School and owns the Oceânico Victoria Golf Course, host venue of the Portugal Masters.

The tournament organisers are also providing the Federation with a small investment to assist in the development of the junior golf initiative.

All parties were represented at the junior golf experience on Saturday morning, when Jiménez and Edfors leant their support in a bid to encourage the juniors to follow in their footsteps.

“This is the most important thing we can do for golf, because these kids are the future of the sport,” said Jiménez, a winner of 18 European Tour titles and one of José María Olazábal’s Vice Captains for the ‘Miracle of Medinah’.

“In Sweden, I have already been involved myself many times in the promotion of golf among youngsters, so I’m delighted to be here,” said three-time European Tour champion Edfors.

Keith Waters, Chief Operating Officer of The European Tour, said: “We are very pleased to assist in the great work being done by the Portuguese Federation and the Vilamoura Golf Club School, which is supported by Oceânico, and we are delighted to make a contribution to the development of junior golf in the country. We hope in years to come to see more Portuguese players following the lead of Ricardo Santos by winning on The European Tour.”

Santos’ elder brother Hugo was also in attendance, along with his fellow Portuguese professional António Rosado; Manuel Agrellos, President of the Portuguese Golf Federation; and Chris Stilwell, President of Vilamoura Golf Club and CEO of Oceânico.
