Richard Sterne prepares to play his second shot on the ninth hole during the first round of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic (Getty Images)
A perfect first day at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic saw no less that 22 players (16.7% of the field) play the Emirates course without dropping a single shot. We analyse the first round performances of Richard Sterne and Stephen Gallacher, plus round up the early leaders of the Genworth Statistics.
Richard STERNE -10
Richard Sterne fell one short of the course record with his round of 62, which consisted of 10 birdies and no drop shots. He led the Genworth Greens in Regulation statistic with 94.4% (17/18) and topped the Par 3 Scoring with a 2.25 average (alongside Thorbjørn OLESEN, Andreas HARTØ and Craig LEE). The 5 time winner on the European Tour may not have achieved quite as much as his compatriots Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel over recent years, but if you watch him on the range, you will see that Richard is most definitely a big talent.

Stephen GALLACHER -9
Stephen Gallacher holed from off the green 3 times during his round of 63 over the Emirates course. In the 18 holes he made 2 eagles, 7 birdies and 2 bogeys, in doing so leading the Par 4 Scoring with a 3.30 average. Stephen began his 2013 campaign at the start of the Middle East Swing and his results from the first two events have been quite average. His fast start to this week presents him with an ideal opportunity to finish the Swing in style.
