Shane Lowry will put his firm friendship with Rory McIlroy to one side for a few hours at the WGC – Accenture Match Play Championship as he looks to take the scalp of the World Number One and send a shockwave through the world of golf.
Lowry, in great form since his maiden professional victory at the Portugal Masters in October last year, may be a largely unknown quantity in America, but the care-free Irishman is relishing the chance to take down the best player on the planet having acknowledged he has ‘nothing to lose’ in his first round match.
Speaking to the world’s media ahead of the tournament, Lowry was in typically fine fettle as he fielded questions on his relationship with McIlroy which goes back to their days as young amateur team-mates representing Ireland in the European Team Championships.
His American audience were curious to find out more about the man from Offaly who won the Irish Open as an amateur in 2009,
It was there, at the famous links of Baltray, that McIlroy memorably led the celebrations for his pal as he doused Lowry in champagne amongst some epic scenes on the 18th green following Lowry’s play-off win over Englishman Robert Rock.
As he faced the American and rest of the world’s press in the Media Centre at The Golf Course at Dove Mountain in Tucson, Lowry had the glint in his eye and the cheeky grin on his face that make him one of the Tour’s unmistakable and infectious characters.
Having answered the serious questions about his match with McIlroy – “I am really looking forward to getting out there; it's going to be a very difficult match; for me to be able to go out and play against the best golfer in the world is going to be a good test of my game”, Lowry began to entertain his audience with some classic Shane answers, none more than the below question which had the assembled crowd rolling in the aisles.
QUESTION: If somebody were looking for similarities between you and Rory, what would they be?
SHANE LOWRY: I used to have curly hair! I don't think there's many, to be honest. I actually don't know if there's any. He plays golf….
And with that, Lowry smiled his way out of the Media Centre and back to the range to prepare for his day of destiny.
No matter what the result of his match against McIlroy, you can bet your bottom dollar that Shane will have a smile on his face at the end of the day.
