A glorious first day at the Tshwane Open saw no less than 79 players break Par over the Ernie Els designed Copperleaf Golf & Country Estate course. We analyse Darren Fichardt’s first round performance, plus round up the early leaders of the Genworth Statistics.

Darren Fichardt carried on where he left off a few weeks ago (when he won the Africa Open, his 4th European Tour victory to date), by leading at the finish of Round 1. Over the enormous Copperleaf course, he averaged 314 yards off the tee, ranking 11th for the Genworth Driving Distance statistic. But it was on the greens where he really stood out. Darren took just 24 putts over the 18 holes, which included ten single putts (plus a holed shot from off the green).
