It was a very different experience on the Jaypee Greens Golf & Spa Resort back nine for Chinnarat Phadungsil as Scotland’s David Drysdale took over the lead on day two of the Avantha Masters.

Thailand’s Phadungsil had covered the inward half in just 28 shots in his opening round – a run which included eight birdies in nine holes – as he opened with an 11 under par 61 for a five shot lead; just one shy of The European Tour first round record.

However, starting on the back nine on his return to the course, there was a double bogey at the 11th, four bogeys and two birdies in a four over 40.

That was followed by another dropped shot at the first, and as Phadungsil slipped to six under Drysdale made his way to the top of the leaderboard.

The 37 year old Scot, yet to win in almost 300 European Tour starts, followed his opening 67 with four birdies on the front nine to turn in a four under 32.

At nine under he led by one from China’s Liang Wen-chong, who was two under for the day through three holes, with Phadungsil’s compatriot Chawalit Plaphol third on seven under after turning in a one under 35.

Defending champion Jbe Kruger was one under for both his round and the tournament after six holes as the South African battled to survive the halfway cut.
