Course Info

Greens
Type of grass - mix of Poa Anuua and Bent grass
Height of cut - 3mm
Speed / stimpmeter reading - 11'4
Any specific comments - greens quite small and re-design means that many of them have run-offs which make them very hard to hit and keep the ball on

Fairways
Type of grass - mix of Poa Annua and Rye grass
Height of cut - 10mm
General width and contouring - average width but due to mountainside location many are either severely up or down hill
Any specific comments - none

Tees / collars
Type of grass - mix of Poa Annua and Rye grass
Height of cut - 10mm
Any specific comments - none

Rough
Type of grass - mix of Poa Annua and Rye grass
Height of cut - semi 1.8m wide at 32mm, intermediate topped at 85mm
Any specific comments - not particularly penal following hot and dry summer

Weather
Weather in advance - very dry and warm summer
Forecast for tournament - mild with part sunshine and light to moderate winds, some rain possible at the weekend

Course
Opened - 1908
Course designer - Fremantle and Gedge, before redesign by M Nicholson in 1929 and Seve Ballesteros in 1999
Special features - the 5th and 6th are drivable par fours, although very tight, so a risky play, whle the 7th is a driveable par four for everyone with out of bounds close on the right
General playability - the course plays quite tough with the design and firmness of the greens which shed the balls if not properly controlled, and the ball travels at least another ten percent at this altitude
Undulating / flat - very undulating
Tree lined / exposed - tree lined in most places
Many / few water hazards - a few more hazards this year (see below) so now on holes 10, 12, 13, 14, 17 and 18
Changes to the course - Some considerable redesign has taken place over the winter with a lake added to the drive zone on hole 10 and another one added in front of the green on hole 12. The 13th has been completely redesigned with the green being lowered by 9 metres, the tee raised, two lakes built in front of the green and a large natural grandstand built behind the green to create an amphitheatre environment. The 17th hole also now has a small stream running across the fairway just short of the green to increase the risk for a player trying to drive close to this green.

Other features
The most stunning venue on The European Tour with views up to the Pleine Morte Glacier and across the mountain ranges and valley below the 7th tee
