Brett Rumford ()
Brett Rumford ()

One of the most travelled golfers on the planet this year, Brett Rumford is loving a rare visit home at the ISPS HANDA Perth International.

The man from Western Australia, who won back-to-back European Tour titles in Korea and China earlier this year, will play his 21st European Tour event of the season at Lake Karrinyup Country Club having taken full advantage of the Tour’s International Schedule by playing in Asia, the Middle East, Europe and America.

Rumford has racked up tens of thousands of air miles, which makes this week’s homecoming all the more special as he looks to win for the third time this year against a field which includes star names such as Paul Casey, Branden Grace, Dustin Johnson and defending champion Bo Van Pelt.

“It's been great to come back home and spend a good bit of time in Perth,” said Rumford. “I have been away so much and travelled so much this year that I couldn't really celebrate the victories as well as I would have liked.  The fact it’s been six months since them sort of dilutes that a little bit, but it's still nice to be back and obviously the reception back here was great after the wins, and still is.

“It's just been a mad rush this year, and I've pretty much travelled every Sunday or Monday. It's a good problem to have, though because the wins opened a lot of doors, and you just can't not play in World Golf events and Major championships.  That’s what you play for.

“So I am a little bit tired but I am playing at home this week and I'm going to have the adrenaline running tomorrow and I'm sure I'll manage physically no problem at all.”

As Rumford’s star has risen across the globe, so has his profile in his homeland, and he is enjoying being among the star attractions at Lake Karrinyup, where he play the opening two rounds in the company of Johnson and Van Pelt.

“There has definitely been a step up this year in my game and as a result of that my expectations,” Rumford continued.

“You have got to keep things realistic at the same time because it’s a very difficult game and it's difficult to keep your intensity up to the level that you need to be able to compete at this level, but I think I have managed it quite well.

“There is definitely extra pressure on me this week because I have had a great year and people will be expecting me to perform at home but I put that pressure on myself – I expect to perform well this week, no doubt about it.”
