This week European Tour Weekly is in Ireland for The Irish Open. It promises to be a spectacular event as the cream of The European Tour comes to Fota Island Resort, Co. Cork, as it returns to the venue for the first time since 2002. In total there will be seven Major champions on display, including two former US Open champions in Rory Mcllroy and Graeme McDowell, and as usual ETW will be on the range getting the thoughts from the players.
There have been two home winners of The Irish Open in the past 7 years and Simon Thornton will be hoping to add his name to that list this week. Thornton’s win at the 2013 Najeti Hotels et Golfs Open completed a remarkable rise through the professional ranks, having been off a handicap of seven just a decade or so ago. Thornton recently spoke to ETW about his rise from club golf to European Tour winner.
Our review comes from the US OPEN in North Carolina and ETW will bring you the best of the action from Pinehurst Resort.
At Pinehurst last week ETW met up with Denmark’s Lucas Bjerregaard who was making his US OPEN debut. As an outstanding amateur with a handicap of plus five he won the European Amateur Championships in 2010 and competed at national level for his country. After claiming the 21st card at the 2013 Qualifying School Final Stage to gain his European Tour status Bjerregaard qualified for his first American major championship by coming through qualifying at Walton Heath.
It is just 100 days to go until THE 2014 RYDER CUP gets under way and ETW will be at Gleneagles to mark the countdown.
Together with all of the latest news and statistics from the Tour, this completes another edition of European Tour Weekly.
