Zander Lombard joined Michael Hoey at the top of the leaderboard as the second round of the The Rocco Forte Open - Verdura, Sicily brought more low scoring on Friday.
Hoey fired a brilliant ten under par 61 on day one to share the lead with Sebastian Soderberg and Lombard was just one shot back overnight after a birdie-birdie finish at Verdura Golf Club.
With Soderberg out in the afternoon, Hoey and Lombard had the chance to create breathing space and they duly did just that, both moving to 14 under on the back nine of their second rounds.
That was four shots clear of Soderberg and Wade Ormsby, who made a fine start to his second round.
Northern Irishman Hoey went birdie-bogey on the second and third but then rattled off gains on the fifth, seventh and ninth to turn in 33. Another birdie on the 11th then helped leave him 14 under with five to play.
Lombard had made birdies in bunches on day one and the South African was at it again, claiming a hat-trick from the third and then adding another on the seventh before a fifth gain of the day on the tenth saw him share the lead after 11 holes.
Australian Ormsby bogeyed his opening hole of the day but then made birdies on the second, fourth, seventh, ninth, tenth and 12th.
Spaniard Eduardo de la Riva, Australian Marcus Fraser, German Sebastian Heisele and South African Jbe Kruger were then all at nine under with their second rounds under way.
