How it works: Belgian Knockout

Related Content

This week's Belgian Knockout becomes the latest addition to the European Tour International Schedule, offering golf fans something a little different. Hosted by three-time Tour winner Thomas Pieters, the event will combine 36 holes of traditional stroke play with a weekend of knockout matches in the first event to be held in Belgium since 2000.

It joins the ISPS HANDA World Super 6, GolfSixes, Shot Clock Masters and the European Golf Team Championships as events on Tour that are pushing the sport's boundaries through innovative formats. The inaugural edition will take place at Rinkven International Golf Club, with a composite of holes from the North and South Courses being used to make up 18 holes. Ahead of the first tee shot on Thursday, europeantour.com takes a look at everything you need to know about this week's tournament.

How many players are in the field?

There will be 144 players teeing it up in Antwerp, including host Pieters, his fellow Belgians Nicolas Colsaerts and Thomas Detry, and former Ryder Cup players Chris Wood and Robert Karlsson.

Which holes will be in use?

The front nine will consist of the South Course's first hole and holes 11-18. The back nine will consist of holes ten-18 of the North Course.

    What format is being used?

The first two rounds will follow exactly the same format as a normal week on the European Tour; 36 holes of stroke play, followed by a Friday cut. The top 64 after two rounds will make it to the weekend.

The knockout matches begin on Saturday, when the remaining 64 players will be split into two groups.

Within the respective groups, three rounds of knockout matches will be played on Saturday over nine holes in a stroke play format. Whoever plays the nine holes in the lowest score in their match will progress to the next round.

While one group of 32 will compete over the front nine holes, the other group will take on the back nine.

At the end of Saturday's play, there will be eight men left. The nine-hole knockout matches will continue on Sunday to determine the winner.

Are players seeded on the weekend?

Yes - players will be seeded based on their position in the leaderboard after 36 holes.

How will tied matches be settled?

Play-offs will determine any tied matches after nine holes.

Which hole will be used in the play-offs?

The South Course's par four tenth hole, measuring 306 yards, will be used.
