Paul Waring says he has “nothing to lose” after grabbing the last place in the field for this week's US Open Championship.

The 33 year old Englishman will tee up in the United States for the first time as a professional at Shinnecock Hills after coming through a nine-man play-off at Walton Heath.

Waring looked on course to come through the 36-hole qualifier but a disappointing last nine holes led to a second-round 75 and left him battling eight others for one remaining spot.

Nine were quickly whittled down to two, and Waring held off compatriot Ryan Evans to successfully come through qualifying for the year's second Major for the first time.

“I played lovely in my first round and back nine of my second round I lost some momentum,” he said.

“Obviously, to go into a play-off, I walked off fuming with myself for what felt like letting it slip. 14 qualified and i was 15th at the conclusion of my round and only thought the scores would continue to go the other way.

“I felt in control of it (the play-off) and settled throughout, likely because I did feel like it was a second chance after all that went on before.

“I hadn't played US Open qualifiers for three to five years given it didn't suit my schedule.

“I'm trying to enjoy the week, embrace it – a nothing to lose, everything to gain approach.”
