A slice of the Italian action

Our press officer at the BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi brings you all the action from on and off the course at Royal Park I Roveri...

BMW hat-trick
Jorge Campillo made it a hat-trick of BMW cars won on The European Tour this season when he aced the par three 15th on Friday. The Spaniard's splendid four iron earned him the keys to a 6-series Grand Coupe, the same car given to James Morrison at the Irish Open and Andrew Marshall at the BMW International Open for their hole-in-ones. Not sure whether BMW anticipated having to give away three top of the range vehicles in the space of a few months...

Ciao, Mario
The BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi have paid a fitting tribute to Mario Camicia, Italy's 'Mr Golf' who died in December at the age of 70. Camicia was Tournament Director of the Italian Open for many years until 1992, and was the country's first recognised golf commentator. He became known as the voice of golf, and many people in the sport were deeply saddened by his death. This week, on the sixth tee at Royal Park I Roveri, there is a message which translates to "Mario, you are always here".

The boys give back
The Italian Golf Federation has in recent years been producing professional golfers by the bucket load. Matteo Manassero, Lorenzo Gagli, Andrea Pavan, Federico Colombo… the list is as long as your arm, and it’s no coincidence either. Fantastic funding at amateur level has given young guys the support they need early on in their careers, and there is also strong support for lower tier tournaments, with four on the Challenge Tour in Italy this year. It is great to see these guys recognise the help they have had, and be willing to give something back. On Thursday, Pavan, Colombo and Gagli are set to hold a clinic on the driving range, showing their skills and demonstrating how to hit certain shots. And on Friday, Manassero – who won two European Tour titles before he was 18 – will do the same.

Ryder Cup fever
This is the last event on The European Tour International Schedule before The Ryder Cup takes place in a fortnight’s time, so it’s fair to say the contest has cropped up in conversation a few times this week. The subject dominated the press conferences of Martin Kaymer and Francesco Molinari on Wednesday, and the trophy has been doing the rounds at Royal Park I Roveri, being photographed with Molinari and European Captain José María Olazábal for the front cover of Thursday’s programme. Let’s hope the boys – Nicolas Colsaerts included as well – have a brilliant week and the crowds give them a good send-off before they embark on their trip to Chicago a week on Monday.

We say Renato, you say Renato
Nicolas Colsaerts, Martin Kaymer and Francesco Molinari are not the only players in the field who are looking forward to some Ryder Cup action in the coming fortnight. Italian Renato Paratore is one of five amateurs teeing it up at Royal Park I Roveri, and soon will be departing to the States to play in the Junior Ryder Cup, taking place just down the road from Medinah at Olympia Fields Country Club. The 17 year old earned automatic selection to the junior team after winning the 2012 European Young Masters, and he has also been selected to represent Italy in the Eisenhower Trophy. Another Italian won two European Tour titles when he was 17 – a certain Matteo Manassero – so can Renato follow in his footsteps?
