A bigger slice of the action from Durban

Banging the party drum

With the possible exception of The Ryder Cup and the Majors, golf events are invariably peaceful, sedate affairs, with the relative tranquillity only broken intermittently by ripples of polite applause from the respectful galleries. But it was a was a very different scenario on the Saturday afternoon of the Volvo Golf Champions, with up to 80,000 ANC supporters attending the ruling party’s annual rally, held at the Natal Sharks rugby team’s Kings Park Stadium no more than a drive and a pitching wedge from Durban Country Club. The sound of 80,000 voices and several hundred drums filling the air made for an unusual, though very welcome soundtrack to the golfing action. Given his love of house music and DJ-ing, no doubt Nicolas Colsaerts would approve…

A sporting paradise

South Africans are well known for their love of sport, and Durban – the third largest city in this beautiful country – caters for all tastes. With Durban Country Club hosting this week’s Volvo Golf Champions and the nearby Royal Durban Golf Club staging last month’s Nelson Mandela Championship, golfing enthusiasts have been spoilt for choice of late. Football fans are also in for a treat when the Africa Cup of Nations gets underway next week, with the Moses Mabhida Stadium, which was named after the former leader of the South African Communist Party (and can seen behind Louis Oosthuizen in the picture above), hosting a number of matches. The 62,000-seater stadium also hosted the World Cup Semi Final in 2010, when the eventual champions Spain beat Germany 1-0. Virtually next door is the Kings Park Stadium, Natal Sharks’ home ground, whilst petrol heads are also catered for courtesy of the Durban street circuit, which is used for the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport.
