Our man on the ground at Golf- und Land-Club Köln takes you behind the scenes of the Berenberg Masters…

Langer is all class in Cologne

Many players would appear crestfallen after letting a Major Championship slip through their grasp, but on Wednesday afternoon Bernhard Langer showed he possesses as much class away from the course as he does on it by shrugging off the disappointment of his 11th hour collapse in last week’s Senior Open Championship. Langer was charm and grace personified during his numerous media commitments, despite being asked time and time again to re-live his double bogey on the closing hole which ultimately cost him the chance of securing his third Senior Major. It would surprise no-one if the ice cool German showed “bouncebackability” in abundance by winning his second regular Senior Tour event here in Cologne this week. Whilst it might not altogether banish his Birkdale blues, victory on home soil – in a tournament run by his brother Erwin – wouldn’t be a bad consolation…

A course fit for kings

Set in dense forest in Refrath, on the outskirts of Cologne, Golf- und Land-Club Köln is a classic woodland course in every sense. With trees lining virtually every fairway, the emphasis is very much on accuracy rather than power. One of Germany’s oldest courses, it officially opened in 1952 and played host to the German Open in 1978, when a certain Seve Ballesteros shot 20 under par to take the title by two shots from Neil Coles. Five years later, Seve came close to notching a notable double but was denied a second title by American Corey Pavin. The next time this venerable institution hosted a major international tournament was in 2011, when Ian Woosnam won his fourth and most recent Senior Tour title at the second edition of the Berenberg Masters. So if the quality of a course can be measured by the calibre of champions it produces, Golf- und Land-Club Köln is a very fine course indeed…
