The 2015 Commercial Bank Qatar Masters champion wins the award for the tee shot on the 70th hole that secured the South African his sixth European Tour win.
My European Tour fans have spoken and Branden Grace has won the European Tour Shot of the Month for January. The South African's tee shot on the 70th hole of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters won the award with 33% of the votes.
"It’s great to win Shot of the Month," Grace said. "Obviously there are a lot of great shots in a month and it’s nice that people admire the shots that we hit. It’s great to not only win during that week but also to win this award."
Grace started the final day in Qatar tied for the lead with three other players and arrived on the 16th tee on Sunday in need of a moment of magic to pull clear of the field. With one swing of his driver, he delivered, smashing his drive at the 320 yard par four to within five feet of the hole. The eagle two gave him a two shot lead which he didn't relinquish over the final two holes.
"It’s always special to hit a shot like that at a time when it’s needed. It’s exciting to have a drivable par four in the final stretch of an event and it was just one of those where it was just a nice solid driver. As I hit it I knew it was either pretty close or still on the green. Lucky for me it went pretty close to about four or five feet and I managed to roll it in for eagle. It was probably the winning shot for me."
Grace's shot beat out four other shots in the month of January to claim the Shot of the Month. Amazingly Grace had the second best shot also with his escape shot from Qatar receiving 22% of the votes, Rory McIlroy's hole in one earned 17%, Miguel Ángel Jiménez's ace 13% and Andy Sullivan's second shot in The South African Open play-off 11%.
Having voted for Grace's tee shot Alain Coursault from France was randomly selected to win the fan portion of the Shot of the Month competition. Alain will receive a brand new pair of FootJoy HydroLite shoes in the colour of his choice, along with a ball signed by Branden Grace.
