Defending champion Bernhard Langer made a flying start to this year’s Senior Open Championship, carding three birdies in his opening four holes at the pristine Walton Heath Golf Club on Thursday morning.

The 2004 European Ryder Cup Captain has only recently recovered from a thumb injury and has his personal doctor with him in Surrey this week, but he has seemingly made a full recovery at just the right time as he stormed to the top of the leaderboard on four under par.

Scotsman Malcolm MacKenzie joined the German at the summit after he consolidated his front nine score of 33 with a birdie at the tenth hole.

Ian Woosnam, meanwhile, was another former Ryder Cup Captain to enjoy a favourable start, starting his first round with back-to-back birdies before dropping a shot on the fourth hole to leave him on three under par after five holes.
