As Barry Lane and Peter Fowler go head-to-head for the John Jacobs Trophy in this week’s MCB Tour Championship, we take a closer look at the leading two players on the European Senior Tour Order of Merit.
Fowler has a €25,569 lead over Lane in the Order of Merit as he bids to become only the third Australian to win the John Jacobs Trophy following Noel Ratcliffe in 2000 and Ian Stanley in 2001.
Lane, who needs to finish second or better at Constance Belle Mare Plage, would become the fourth different Englishman to capture the trophy following Tommy Horton (1993, 96, 97,98, 99), John Morgan (1984) and Carl Mason (2003,04 and 07).
The pair have recorded 20 top ten finishes between them in 2011, with Fowler recording 12 and Lane 8. Of those, Fowler also has finished in the top five on nine occasions and Lane six times.
They are the only multiple winners on the Senior Tour in 2011, with Fowler winning the ISPS Handa Senior World Championship presented by Stapleford Park and the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open, while Lane successfully defended his Cleveland Golf/Scottish Senior Open title before adding the Casa Serena Open.
Prior to joining the Senior Tour, Fowler won once on The European Tour at the 1993 BMW International Open and Lane claimed five European Tour titles, the last being the 2004 British Masters.
One of them will succeed Thailand’s Boonchu Ruangkit as winner of the John Jacobs Trophy on Sunday night and finish the European Senior Tour’s 20th anniversary season as Number One.
