The European Tour spends a second week in South Africa, as the tour moves onto the capital for the Joburg Open, the event Charl Schwartzel successfully defended last year before going on to become the Masters Champion. European Tour Weekly will be on the range at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club with the thoughts of the players on the eve of the tournament.
Inspired by the successes of Schwartzel and the 2010 Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen, young South African players made their mark on the European Tour last year and this week ETW meets two young golfers hoping to emulate the breakthrough wins of Thomas Aiken, Garth Mulroy and Hennie Otto. Trevor Fisher Jnr is a four-time winner on the Sunshine Tour who was in contention in the 2010 Africa Open and ETW catches up with him in his native Johannesburg. Alex Haindl gained the 25th qualifying card at Q school at the PGA Catalunya resort and started his first full season as a European Tour player at the Africa Open. We spoke to Alex in Buffalo City and will bring you an update on how he and the rest of field fared at East London Golf Club in our review.
This week we also bring you a special report on the President’s Putter, an annual contest between former golfing blues of Oxford and Cambridge University held at Rye Golf Club in East Sussex that dates back to 1920.
Together with all of the latest news and statistics from the Tour, this completes another edition of European Tour Weekly.
