South African Chris Williams reached the turn in 29 as he surged into contention in the second round of the SSE Scottish Senior Open.
Williams eagled the second hole and added three consecutive birdies before picking up another shot on the ninth hole.
He is looking for his second European Senior Tour victory after winning in Brunei last year and a further birdie on the 12th hole took him to the top of the leaderboard, alongside Englishman Steve Cipa who birdied his opening four holes.
After beginning his bid for a hat-trick of titles with a double bogey in the rain-affected first round, Barry Lane’s prospects looked brighter – just like the weather – as the former Ryder Cup carded five birdies in 13 holes.
Former World Number One Ian Woosnam birdied the first and fourth holes to keep in touch with the leaders, with Marc Farry and Anders Forsbrand just beginning their second rounds.
