Edoardo Molinari was delighted to be back in action as he made his return from a three-month injury lay-off at the BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi.

The 31 year old has been sidelined since June after undergoing wrist surgery, an absence which put paid to his chances of qualifying for the European Ryder Cup Team.

However, the two-time European Tour winner carded five birdies and three bogeys for a two under par 70 in his native Turin.

"The wrist is feeling good,” said the former Omega Mission Hills World Cup winner. “I'm very happy with it. There is absolutely no pain at all.

"At the beginning I was aiming to come back for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship [in three weeks' time], but the rehab started going very well and the wrist was responding very quickly so I was able to adjust the target and play here.

"It's a special week this one. I didn't play last year because I was playing in the States, so it's very nice to be back.

"It's an okay start. I was very rusty. I hit the ball quite poorly to be honest, but it's more than two months since I last played in competition. It's going to be a long way back to the top but I'll get there."
