Sweden’s Marcus Larsson fired an incredible nine under par 63 in round two of the First Qualifying Stage Section B at Golf & Country Club Fleesensee to take a commanding six shot lead at the halfway stage in Germany.
After his compatriot Joakim Rask had led overnight in Göhren-Lebbin following a first day 64, Larsson continued his fine form from Tuesday’s opening round – when he shot a six under par 66 – to reach 15 under par and sit comfortably ahead of a trio on nine under par.
Larsson found seven birdies on the opening nine holes to turn in 29 blows, before another three on the back nine were only slightly tempered by his only dropped shot of the day at the closing par four 18th.
Rask, who had looked in imperious form in the first round, faced a more testing second day but still managed to sign for a one under par 71 to tie for second after 36 holes alongside amateurs Tapio Pulkkanen of Finland and Sebastian Schwind of Germany.
At Wychwood Park, meanwhile, England’s Rob Harris shot a five under par 67 to claim a three shot lead in the other First Qualifying Stage being staged this week in the north of England.
Northern Ireland’s Alan Dunbar, who earlier this year won the Amateur Championship at Royal Troon, carded a best-of-the-day 66 to climb into a share of second in Cheshire alongside England’s Ryan O’Neill on three under par.
A total of 184 players are competing in the second week of the European Tour Qualifying School at Golf and Country Club Fleesensee – a European Tour Course – and Wychwood Park, with the leading 24 players and ties from the German venue near Berlin progressing through to the Second Stage, while the top 23 and ties will make it through from the Cheshire course.
Somewhere in the region of 28% of the field will make it through to the Second Qualifying Stage which will take place across four venues in Spain – Campo de Golf El Saler, Las Colinas Golf & Country Club, El Valle Golf Resort and Lumine Golf & Beach Club – from November 7-10. Approximately 310 players will line up at those four venues, with about 80 progressing through to the Final Stage at PGA Catalunya Resort – also a European Tour Course - from November 24-29.
