Mikko Kornonen of Finland roared into the outright lead at the Qualifying School Final Stage thanks to three successive birdies which moved him to 15 under par, a shot clear of England’s John Parry.

The 32 year old had started relatively steadily having reached the turn in one under par thanks to a birdie at the par five third hole, but as he began his journey back his round took flight as he gained shots at the par four tenth, par three 11th and par five 12th to reach the 13th tee on four under for the day.

That put an end to a brief spell in the outright lead for Parry, who had moved to the front with birdies at the first, fourth, fifth and seventh holes, but a bogey at the 13th hole meant he dropped back to tied second place alongside his compatriot Andy Sullivan, who negotiated his opening 12 holes in two under.

Matthew Southgate was making the most progress as the Englishman, who gained a European Tour card via the Qualifying School Final Stage last year, was four under par through 14 holes thanks to five birdies and a bogey.

Overnight leader Estanislao Goya dropped five shots off the lead, meanwhile, having dropped three shots in his opening four holes, but he moved back towards the summit with a birdie at the tenth hole.

Andrew McArthur provided one of the unfortunate stories of the day as the Scotsman looked to be on course for finishing the day in the top 25 thanks to four birdies and a bogey in his first nine holes, but, having teed off on the tenth, he dropped six shots on the way back including a quadruple bogey at the par four fourth hole.
