The 2012 European Senior Tour season reaches its conclusion at next week’s MCB Tour Championship in Mauritius, but for those players looking to be part of next year’s campaign there is just one month left to enter the European Senior Tour Qualifying School.
Around 180 hopefuls are expected to compete over the two stages at the Pestana Golf Resort on Portugal’s Algarve as they attempt to win a card for the 2013 Senior Tour, earning them the opportunity to play alongside some of the iconic names of European golf such as Sandy Lyle, Sam Torrance, Ian Woosnam and double Senior Major Champion Roger Chapman.
Entry forms are available to download now on www.europeantour.com in the Senior Tour Qualifying School section, or by emailing The European Tour’s Entries Department (email@example.com). The closing date is January 7, 2013.
The First Stage will take place on January 24 and 25, 2013, over two courses at the Pestana Golf Resort: Silves Golf and the Nick Price-designed Gramacho course.
The Final stage, contested by 72 players, will then take place at Pestana’s Vale da Pinta from Monday January 28 to Thursday January 31, where the leading six players will receive full cards for the 2013 season, and players finishing in positions seven to 14 receiving conditional cards.
It will be the 20th staging of the qualifying school, which was first played in 1993. American Dick Mast won the 2012 Qualifying School final stage and he went on to finish tied third in The Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex. He is on course to finish in the top 20 on the Senior Tour Order of Merit.
Englishman Paul Wesselingh, who was runner up to Mast, has also enjoyed a fine season after securing his playing privileges at Qualifying School, winning the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship and sealing the Rookie of the Year Award. Wesselingh is fifth on the Order of Merit heading into the season finale and could earn his place in the 2013 US Senior Open should he break into the top four next week.
Tim Thelen, who preceded Mast as the winner of the Qualifying School, has also gone on to have a successful Senior Tour career, winning three times in 2012 at the Berenberg Bank Masters in Germany, the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open in Switzerland and the Fubon Senior Open in Taiwan.
Other previous winners of the Senior Tour Qualifying School include Argentine Horacio Carbonetti (2002), winner of the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open in 2003 and 2004, and Stewart Ginn (2005), winner of the 2008 Azores Senior Open.
Pestana Dom João II will be the official players’ hotel for the Senior Tour Qualifying School. It is the 12th consecutive time that Pestana Golf Resort has hosted the Senior Tour Qualifying School, having first staged it in 2001.
