A wet and windy first day at the Volvo Golf Champions finished with tournament favourites Ernie Els and Louis Oosthuizen figuring high on the leaderboard. But it was the ISPS Handa Wales Open champion Thongchai Jaidee who prevailed with a three shot lead.

Some interesting statistics were thrown up over the Durban course, which measures just 6,732 yards in length (approximately 500 yards shorter than the typical Par 72 European Tour venue).

Overall the field of 33 tournament champions amassed a total of 23 double bogey or worse scores in the tough conditions, and the Par 3 fourth hole played the most difficult of all. Not a single birdie was achieved, with the Stroke Average of the hole being an unusually high 3.64.

Below we analyse the performance of the leader Thongchai Jaidee and list his Round 1 Genworth Statistics.

Thongchai JAIDEE -7

Thongchai ranked pretty average in terms of accuracy off the tee but he produced some solid approach play in the tough first round conditions. His short game and putting statistics however were fantastic. He topped the Genworth Putts per GIR, Putts per Round and 1 Putts rankings, single putting 8 of the first 10 greens in doing so. Not bad for a player making his first ever trip to South Africa.
