This week the Genworth Stats Pack travels to Abu Dhabi where a stellar field competes for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. Since its inception in 2006 this event has always been staged at the prestigious Abu Dhabi Golf Club, which gives us the chance to dig into the past and analyse those players with course form. But we also highlight some notable appearances.

Martin KAYMER

Even with the world number one and two present this week we must give centre stage to Martin Kaymer. In six starts over the Abu Dhabi course he has been victorious three times and finished second once. It is safe to say he gets the pick for course form. Looking at Martin’s Genworth Statistics from those events (below), he generally hits the ball long and straight off the tee which then enables him to hit lots of greens. Just look at his Genworth Greens in Regulation statistics for 2011 (86.1% translates into 62 out of 72 greens).

Rory MCILROY

Rory McIlroy is most definitely due a win at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. He has finished in the top five in each of his last four visits and the course is perfect for his game. He generally plays the Par 3 and Par 4 holes well and he always ranks high on the Genworth Greens in Regulation statistic (see the table below), but it is the Par 5 holes where he really does the damage. Over 2011/2012 for 32 Par 5 holes played, he made 3 eagles and 14 birdies with no drop shots, achieving a world beating Par 5 Scoring average of 4.38.

Paul CASEY

Off the back of a very solid end to 2012 and three consecutive 69’s last week at the Volvo Golf Champions (after a slow start), Paul Casey returns to Abu Dhabi as a course specialist and two-time past champion. Looking at his previous Genworth Statistics for this event (below), he is another player that seems to perform well from tee to green over the long course (a vital ingredient for winning). Paul is one of the world’s very best golfers and a return to winning ways surely cannot be far away.

Tiger WOODS

Tiger Woods makes his second appearance running at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship this week off the back of a third place finish last year. Looking at his Genworth Statistics 12 months ago, Tiger played well on the Par 3 holes (ranking 14th with a 2.75 average) and the Par 4 holes (ranking 3rd with a 3.90 average). But in contrast to Rory McIlroy, Tiger did not seem to play the Par 5 holes very well. On those holes he hit just 43.8% of the fairways and 68.8% of the greens for a Par 5 Scoring average of 4.81 (rank 48th). This week should be a different story on the Par 5's though. Tiger is the ultimate Par 5 specialist and we look for him to go well.

Robert ROCK

Aside from his fantastic win last year, Robert Rock does not possess the best record around the Abu Dhabi course. His best previous finish was 47th from four attempts. Last year though he produced the correct ingredients needed to win around here. He was long off the tee and accurate into the greens, ranking 5th for both the Genworth Greens in Regulation and Putts per GIR statistics. The same as Tiger Woods he did not seem to play the Par 5 holes all that well but it was the Par 4's where he excelled. He led the field in Par 4 Scoring with a 3.83 average, making 11 of his total 21 birdies on them.

Justin ROSE

Justin Rose has evolved into one of the world’s very best golfers and is a tournament favourite wherever he plays. Statistically he is simply superb. In 2012 he finished at the top of the Genworth Greens in Regulation rankings and in third place for Driving Accuracy (he is not exactly short either). The majority of eyes will of course be glued to the Rory / Tiger duel but the current world number 5 is more than capable of taking them both down.

Ernie ELS

Ernie Els has enjoyed an illustrious career in the game of golf with the accolade of boasting major championship victories in three separate decades. But the big easy fans needn’t worry as there are no signs of the 43 year old slowing down just yet. The Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship is Ernie’s second event in a row on the European Tour following last week’s Volvo Golf Champions. Statistically his long game seemed to be in good shape in Durban, recording 76.4% for the Genworth Greens in Regulation statistic (ranking 3rd). Ernie's game should be suited to this course.

Ambassador

Peter HANSON

This will be Peter Hanson’s first event of the 2013 campaign. The Genworth Ambassador enjoyed his best ever year on the European Tour in 2012 with two wins, a second and a couple of third place finishes. Statistically he was arguably the best putter on tour, heading up the Genworth Putts per GIR rankings and finishing in the top five for Putts per Round. Peter has played in every one of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championships since they began in 2006, enjoying some good results along the way. Good luck this week.

Scott JAMIESON

Scott Jamieson has had a dream start to the European Tour 2013 season with a win at the Nelson Mandela Championship presented by ISPS Handa, a third at the Alfred Dunhill Championship and a second at the Volvo Golf Champions event last week. Looking at his Genworth Statistics for those events below, pay attention to his long game statistics from last week (they are exactly what is needed here). Scott has played the Abu Dhabi event once before (last year) where he unfortunately missed the cut. Many eyes will be on the Scotsman this week to see if he can keep his incredible run going.

Padraig HARRINGTON

Last but by no means least is three time major champion Padraig Harrington. Padraig has recorded 9th and 4th place finishes in his last two starts on the European Tour. And on his official website he highlights that he has been trying out a new putting routine, which seems to be working great from his Genworth Putting Statistics at the Volvo Golf Champions (below). On his website he also explains he will be seeing coach Pete Cowen in Abu Dhabi for the first time in six weeks to sharpen up his long game. We look on with interest.
