Former champion Luis Carbonetti cruised into the lead during the opening morning of the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters at Woburn Golf Club.
Argentina’s Carbonetti, who won across the Duke’s Course in 2004, made two birdies in a front nine 33 before adding a further three gains following the turn to reach five under par, two shots clear of his nearest competitor Massy Kuramoto of Japan, who eagled the long first hole before adding a birdie at the par three third.
One shot further back as the morning progressed at a bright and breezy Woburn were a burgeoning group at two under par which included two-time Senior Masters winner Carl Mason, 1991 Masters Tournament Champion Ian Woosnam and Senior Tour rookie Colin Montgomerie.
Also at that mark during the early stages was the Senior Tour’s most recent winner, Santiago Luna, after the Spaniard, who won the SSE Scottish Senior Open two weeks ago, started with a pair of birdies.
Woburn is this week hosting its 53rd professional tournament and 30th with The European Tour, while the 2013 Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters is the 13th to be held in succession across the revered Duke’s Course.
