£194,190 raised for BBC Children in Need through Chris Evans’ BMW PGA Championship 2014 charity auction

The BBC airwaves reverberated to the sound of golfing success today as the now-legendary charity auction conducted by the BBC’s popular BBC Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans, raised a staggering £194,190 for the BBC Children in Need Appeal.

Not content with re-creating one stunning ‘Super Swing Golf Package’  to play with one of the world’s leading players, Evans upped the ante in spectacular fashion by auctioning two of these  ‘chance of a lifetime’ golf experiences on his Breakfast Show today.

And the rare opportunity to rub shoulders with Ryder Cup heroes Graeme McDowell and Justin Rose on Wentworth Club’s iconic West Course during the BMW PGA Championship Celebrity Pro-Am next May proved an irresistible lure to four generous benefactors who parted with £194,190 of their cash to play with those legends.

McDowell, who will once again partner Evans in the star-studded Celebrity Pro-Am event on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, will be joined by his Ryder Cup team-mate and reigning US Open Champion, Justin Rose, before the pair contest the BMW PGA Championship proper as part of a world class field.

Rose will form the professional part of the Pro-Am team alongside Breakfast Show Sports Presenter Vassos Alexander, while today’s successful bidders will fill the two remaining spaces in each team (TBC).

Both McDowell, the 2010 US Open Champion, and Rose participated in this morning’s radio show as the ‘Super Swing Golf Packages’ for 2014 went under the hammer in aid of the BBC’s Children in Need Appeal. Both men are currently in Dubai for The European Tour’s season finale, the DP World Tour Championship but took time to participate in the Charity Auction.

The magnificent package for 2014 will include:
• Appear on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2 on Pro-Am Day
• Warm-up round of Golf at Sunningdale Golf Club on Tues 20th May 2014
• 5 nights’ Accommodation at the Runnymede-on- Thames Hotel in Surrey (Bed & Breakfast basis, complimentary use of the Spa).
• BMW transfer from Hotel to Wentworth Golf Club return
• Custom fitted clubs courtesy of Titleist.  Plus Footjoy Golf Shoes, Balls and Gloves!
• Two x 4 Balls consisting of 4 winners, Chris Evans with Graeme McDowell; Vassos Alexander with Justin Rose
• Dinner at The Royal Oak, Paley Street – courtesy of Sir Michael Parkinson
• Season Ticket for all (Thurs 22nd – Sun 25th May  2014)
• Full week’s BMW Pavilion Hospitality overlooking the 18th Green – hosted by The European Tour

Chris Evans said: “We were knocked out by the generosity of last year’s bidders, but today’s auction has surpassed all expectations for 2014. Playing with GMac in the BMW PGA Championship Pro-Am was an absolute joy for the two successful bidders and me, and the experience will be worth every penny again next May.

“Now, with a class act like Justin on board to play in Vassos’s team with today’s benefactors, we are delighted to raise considerably more than last year’s auction for such a worthwhile charity - BBC Children in Need.”

McDowell said: “The Super Swing Package is unique – the experience of a lifetime. We’ve had a great time in the past and this year’s benefactors will have a fun day out again with lots of celebrities and famous faces at Wentworth.”

Rose added: “The BMW PGA Championship Pro-Am is the best of the year and it will be even better from my point of view being involved with Chris and Vassos on behalf of a wonderful cause in Children in Need.”

Jamie Birkmyre, Championship Director for the BMW PGA Championship, added: “We are privileged to play a small part of helping to raise substantial amounts for BBC Children in Need through Chris’ fantastic auction.

“It was a great but nerve-wracking experience listening to the bidding process on the show, with the totals going higher and higher until the final total of £194,190 was achieved. Our generous bidders should have a fabulous time during the week of the BMW PGA Championship and I can guarantee they will have great fun in the company of Graeme, Justin, Chris and Vassos in the Pro-Am, as well as the other activities which form the overall package.”
