Made a fine effort trying to land his first Major at the 138th Open Championship but ended up joint fifth, one of four top ten finishes during a relatively injury-free 2009. A wrist injury incurred playing out of rough at the 2008 US Open Championship ended his season and he was forced to undergo surgery to repair the tendon which ruled him out of action for the second half of the year. Developed a reputation as one of the most consistent players in the game with two European Tour wins and two US PGA Tour successes, a World Cup triumph for England in partnership with Paul Casey in 2004, and victory in the Tiger Woods-sponsored Target World Challenge in 2005. Both European Tour triumphs came in 2004 and fully justified the decision of Bernhard Langer to give him a wild card for The Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills where he won twice in Europe’s record breaking victory. Made the Team by rights in 2006 and emerged with a one hundred percent record, three wins out of three as Europe equalled their record winning margin. Earned a degree in art theory and practice at Northwestern College in the United States. Donated one of his paintings to a pgatour.com auction and the winning bid was $1,640, which was split between US PGA Tour Charities and junior golf charity in Chicago. Brother Christian caddies for him. In an outstanding amateur career was part of Great Britain and Ireland’s Walker Cup victories over the United States in both 1999 and 2001.
