Started the 2009 season well with a runner-up finish at the Dubai Desert Classic but had to wait until October for his next top ten, at the Portugal Masters where he tied for sixth. Made a superb Ryder Cup debut in 2008 playing alongside friend Ian Poulter in foursomes and fourballs and then defeating Phil Mickelson 3 and 2 in the singles, a month after finishing tied ninth in the US PGA Championship.
