A unique sandstone Ryder Cup plaque was unveiled in Newport recently to commemorate the staging of golf’s marquee team competition at The Celtic Manor Resort, in the Welsh City, in 2010.
The Ryder Cup director, Richard Hills, was joined by Councillor Matthew Evans, leader of Newport City Council, and Andrew Morris, head of streetscene at Newport City Council, as they officially unveiled the plaque, which has been built into the pavement outside the Newport Civic Centre.
The 2010 Ryder Cup was held at The Celtic Manor Resort in October last year when the European Team emerged victorious by a score of 14½ -13½ in one of the most dramatic final days in the history of the prestigious event.
After a tense battle, Graeme McDowell won the final match on the 17th green to reclaim The Ryder Cup trophy from the USA, sparking scenes of celebration that will forever be etched in the memories of the thousands who witnessed and the millions who watched around the world.
The sandstone plaque was manufactured by Forest Pennant using Welsh Pennant sandstone and depicts the Ryder Cup trophy on a gold background with the words “Host City to The Ryder Cup 2010” inscribed underneath.
Richard Hills, director of The Ryder Cup, said: “I think this plaque provides a fitting tribute to the people of Newport and especially Newport City Council, who proved that it is a ‘can do’ city by not only bringing this great event to Wales for the first time, but by helping make it such a huge success.
“The fact that The 2010 Ryder Cup will go down as one of the most memorable in history is a testament to everyone who played a part in the staging of this event.
“The hard work and kind hospitality we received throughout the week and beyond in Newport was of the highest standard and therefore we are delighted to commemorate this with this beautiful plaque.”
Matthew Evans, Newport Council Leader, said: “In the build up to and during the tournament, council staff put in long hours to ensure the tournament ran smoothly and showed Newport off in the best possible light.
“I am delighted that this hard work has been formally recognised and I would like to thank Ryder Cup Europe for providing the plaque, which will serve as a permanent reminder of the time the city hosted the most successful ever Ryder Cup. We have built an excellent relationship with Ryder Cup Europe and they were very supportive of what we achieved in Newport to mark such a special year for the city.”
