Senior Tour Champion Barry Lane qualified for his 15th Open Championship after progressing through Local Final Qualifying (LFQ) at St Annes Old Links.
Lane, who has added three Senior Tour titles to his six European Tour titles since turning 50 two years ago, spectacularly chipped in for an eagle three at the final hole to earn his place in The Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes later this month.
Rounds of 68 and 70 left him one behind 46 year old Paul Broadhurst, another fellow Ryder Cup player with the Senior Tour on the horizon, and tied with 21 year old Argentinian Rafael Echenique who will make his first Major appearance.
Royal Lytham & St Annes will be the 682nd European Tour appearance of Lane's career, only 24 short of Sam Torrance's record. His Open debut came 25 years ago and the last time he played was in 2006.
Lane’s Open qualification also caps a fine few days for the Englishman after his joint second finish in last week’s Berenberg Masters.
