Bernhard Langer took over as the best placed European at the Constellation Senior Players Championship on the US Champions Tour as Fred Couples remained on course for victory.

Couples will defend his title in The Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex at Royal Birkdale next month, and completed a second round 62 before adding a third round 67 as the tournament made up for lost time at Fox Chapel Golf Club.

At 15 under par Couples led by two from compatriot Kenny Perry, with Germany’s Langer tied for 11th on six under after a brilliant third round 63.

Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie, who turned 50 on June 23, was three under par through 12 holes overnight but gave them back with triple bogey seven on the 15th before recovering somewhat with a 68 to lie three under for the tournament.

England’s Roger Chapman, who defends his US Senior Open title next month, was level with Montgomerie following a third consecutive 69.
