Created history in 2012 when he became the first Englishman to win the US Senior PGA Championship with a two stroke victory at Harbor Shores, in Michigan. He then returned to the same State to win the US Senior Open at Indianwood, overturning Bernhard Langer’s four shot lead. In doing so he became only the fourth player after Gary Player (1987), Jack Nicklaus (1991) and Hale Irwin (1998) to do the double in the same season. Went on to claim the John Jacobs Trophy after topping the Order of Merit. Had previously had several near misses, including losing in a play-off to David Frost in the Mauritius Commercial Bank Open in 2011. Had a two shot lead on the final hole but Frost eagled it to take the tournament into a play-off, and the South African claimed victory on the second extra hole. Made a flying start to life on the Senior Tour in 2009, leading both the Son Gual Mallorca Senior Open and the Irish Seniors Open in association with Fáilte Ireland and AIB Bank going into the final round, before finishing third and tied third respectively. Sandwiched in between was a hole-in-one on his Senior Major Championship debut in the US Senior PGA Championship. Just missed out on the Rookie of the Year award when Mike Harwood won the final event of the season. Joined the Senior Tour following a spell as a Tour Rules Official in 2007 and 2008. Won his maiden European Tour title on his 472nd start, defeating Padraig Harrington at the second hole of a play-off for the 2000 Brazil Rio de Janeiro 500 Years Open. Underwent laser surgery on his eyes after years of wearing glasses. Six times a runner-up on The European Tour before winning in Brazil, then went into the winners’ circle again late in 2000, capturing the Hassan II Trophy in Morocco. Reached the milestone of 600 European Tour appearances in the 2005 Jazztel Open de España en Andalucia. When he turned professional in 1981 it was with an impressive amateur pedigree, including an English Amateur Championship and a Walker Cup appearance in 1981, when he beat Hal Sutton twice in one day at Cypress Point.
