Biography

Brian is one of the most colourful figures in world golf but is now seen much more behind a TV microphone than on the golf course as a result of a severe arthritic condition that has brought his Seniors Tour career to a premature end. He learned the game from his father who was Secretary at Burnham and Berrow Golf Club and later became a pupil of 1951 Open champion Max Faulkner who was also to become his father-in-law. Brian was one of the "Butten Boys" in the mid 1960s and went on to win a total of ten titles on The European Tour. In six Ryder Cup appearances he formed a hugely successful foursomes and four ball partnership with Bernard Gallacher but is undoubtedly best remembered for beating Jack Nicklaus twice in one day in the 1975 Matches at Laurel Valley. Within two months of his 50th birthday Brian made a sensational start to his Seniors career by wining the 1995 Senior British Open at Royal Portrush. The following year he became the first golfer to successfully defend the title and also won once on the US Senior Tour at the AT&T Canada Seniors Open. Brian now spends his time as a TV analyst.
