Created golfing history in 2010 when he won back-to-back Senior Major Championships; firstly The Senior Open Championship presented by MasterCard at Carnoustie, in Scotland, and then the US Senior Open at Sahalee in Washington State. Became the first player to win consecutive Senior Majors since Tom Watson in 2003 and the first player from Continental Europe to win the US Senior Open. He also became, after England’s Mark James in the 2004 Ford Senior Players Championship, only the second European golfer to win a Senior Major in the United States. The successes continued his exceptional form in the Senior ranks – he topped the Money List and was named Player of the Year on the US Champions Tour in 2008, 2009 and 2010, also winning the Charles Schwab Cup in the latter. One of the big five of European golf during the 1980s, has enjoyed a glittering career as one of the most remarkably consistent, resilient and admired golfers the world over. Received worldwide acclaim - and an Honorary OBE - for his superb organisation and inspirational Captaincy of Europe’s Ryder Cup Team on their way to a record 18½ - 9½ victory over the United States at Oakland Hills Country Club in 2004. Represented Europe as a player on ten occasions, just one short of Sir Nick Faldo’s record. Conquered adversity in the form of the putting ‘yips’ to reach the top, and has been in the upper echelons of the game for over 20 years - the highlights of which were his two victories in the Masters Tournament at Augusta National in 1985 and 1993. An Honorary Member of The European Tour, was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2002.2.
