Biography

Back-to-back top ten finishes in the Berenberg Bank Masters (tied fifth) and the Van Lanschot Senior Open (tied seventh) were the highlights of 2011 for the former Ryder Cup player. Narrowly missedout on his fourth Senior Tour title when he was runner up to Mike Cunning in the 2010 season-ending OKI Castellón Senior Tour Championship. Last entered the winner's enclosure when he won the 2007 Charles Church Scottish Seniors Open at Marriott Dalmahoy, a fitting climax to a fine season in which he had previously recorded six other top ten finishes. It was his first win since capturing the 2006 FIRSTPLUS Wales Seniors Open. Scooped a maiden victory earlier that season in only his fifth tournament as a senior and his second win arrived four starts later in Wales. A further six top ten finishes helped the Spaniard wrap up third place on the Order of Merit as well as the 2006 Rookie of the Year Award. Worked as a caddie before becoming a professional. His big break on The European Tour came in 1984, when he was given a €3,500 loan from the Spanish Golf Federation. The repayment was swift when he won the Lawrence Batley International that year, as well as the World Cup in Italy with José Maria Cañizares. Went on to win on three other occasions on The European Tour, and played in two winning Ryder Cup Teams in 1985 and 1987.
