Biography

Finally became a Major Champion when he claimed the USA Senior PGA Championship Presented by KitchenAid and the US Senior Open in 2014, having joined the over-50s circuit the year before. Also finished second to Bernhard Langer in The Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex at Royal Porthcawl and was the runaway winner of the Order of Merit in his first full season on the Senior Tour. Won on his third Senior Tour appearance in 2013, at the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters, which he successfully defended 12 months later. Captained Europe to Ryder Cup glory against the United States at The Celtic Manor Resort in October 2010, confirming his legendary status in the biennial contest. Inspired his team to a 14½-13½ victory as The Ryder Cup spilled into Monday for the first time in its history after torrential rain in Wales, and called it the finest moment of his career. The Ryder Cup is in his blood and as a player he represented Europe eight times, becoming in 2006 the then second European to win the contest five times. Was top scorer at the The Belfry in 2002 with four and a half points out of five, and holed the winning putt at Oakland Hills in 2004. Victory over David Toms at The K Club in 2006 ensured he remained unbeaten in eight Ryder Cup singles matches stretching back to 1991. In total he has secured 23½ points from 36 matches and is the third highest points scorer in European history. Also holds the record as the most prolific British winner in European Tour history, with 31 titles. His historic success came in July 2007, when he ended a 19-month winless streak with victory in the European Open at The K Club to surpass Sir Nick Faldo’s previous Tour record of 30 wins. Went on to cap the season in style by partnering Marc Warren to victory in the World Cup in China, securing Scotland’s first victory in the team event. Won an unprecedented eighth Order of Merit title in 2005 following his seven in a row from 1993 to 1999. Attended investiture ceremony held by the Queen at Buckingham Palace in November 1998 to receive an MBE, which was subsequently ‘upgraded’ to an OBE in the 2005 New Year’s Honours List. Was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in May 2013. Made his 600th European Tour appearance at the 2014 Turkish Airlines Open by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
