English amateur Steve Graham grabbed the lead on the opening day of the European Senior Tour Qualifying School Stage One, on the Gramacho Golf Course at Pestana Golf Resorts.
Graham posted a three under par round of 69 to lead Canadian Dave Wettlaufer by a single stroke, with Scotland’s Terry Burgoyne currently in third place on one under par.
On a rainy day in the Algarve region of Portugal, the trio were the only players who finished under par at Gramacho GC, where a minimum of 28 players will progress to the Final Stage, held next week.
Meanwhile, over at Silves Golf Course, England’s Ernie Foster carded the lowest round of the opening day, a four under par 66.
Foster sits on top of a congested leaderboard, with five players sharing second place on three under par: the English trio of Graeme Bell, Jeff Matthews and Mark Wharton, Scotland’s David James and Canadian Jean Laforce.
A minimum of 27 players will progress from Silves GC to the Final Stage, with 17 exempt players joining the 55 qualifiers on the Vale da Pinta Course, at the Pestana Carvoeiro Golf Resort.
